Maritime History and Essence 

Barceloneta's story begins in the 18th century, designed by Juan Martín Cermeño, construction began in 1754, and it later became an industrial hub, notably hosting the Maquinista Terrestre i Marítima factory. The neighborhood was damaged during the Spanish Civil War, and shantytowns, or barracas, became widespread. The 1992 Olympic Games brought the most significant transformation, clearing the shantytowns and creating a new promenade, opening the city to the sea. 

Exploring Modern Barceloneta 

This district's uniform, rectangular streets form a unique triangle between Port Vell and Platja de Barceloneta. Getting here is a breeze on metro Line 4 to the "Barceloneta" stop, or by bus. Dive into the buzzing street life, where you can explore the central Mercat Barceloneta or feast at one of the many fantastic fish restaurants. The bustling promenade provides seamless access to famous beaches like Sant Sebastià, Sant Miquel, and Somorrostro.   • Location: Port Vell, on the edge of the Barceloneta district.
  • Activities: This is a historic 200-meter open water race in the harbor's chilly waters. It attracts hundreds of participants, some in festive costumes.

Nadal al Port Vell (Christmas at Port Vell)

  • Dates: November – January
  • Location: Moll de la Fusta, within Port Vell and adjacent to the Barceloneta district.
  • Activities: This Christmas market features Barcelona's largest Christmas tree, a Ferris wheel, an ice rink, a carousel, and a floating nativity scene.
